My personal experience with AI Design and how I came up with an 'AI logo' for my DJ project

Designing a Memorable DJ Brand: The Fusion of Tradition and Edge

As a DJ who constantly explores new technologies, I was intrigued by the potential of AI in the design process. My musical taste spans everything from old-school funk to the cheesiest pop hits, so I sought a logo that would capture my unique flavor and personality. Establishing a distinct identity is crucial in today’s saturated market. However, translating my diverse musical style, personality, and values into a graphic proved challenging.

So I was going for something quite aggressive but funny at the same time, but my dark sense of humor never translates the way it should, or I seem to be unable to communicate the real meaning behind each joke without losing the funny parts, so I decided this would be a good way to learn something new and polish my communication capabilities to create proper prompts that would not only serve online but also in the real world.

Embracing AI as a Creative Tool

This is why I began working with all the tools I could find, (Copilot, Adobe's engine from Illustrator, same variant from PS, Midjourney. Canva, etc). gathering insights on what they can do and how to properly request a specific task or output I needed. AI-powered design tool, became my creative collaborator. Initially, the process was a learning curve. Crafting effective prompts – the instructions that guide the AI – was key to unlocking its full potential.

SUPER PRO-TIP: It is best when you already know what you want from AI, otherwise the possibilities become humongous and it is almost impossible to choose your favorite variations. My biggest mistake at this point was that I was not really sure if I wanted a logo or just some illustration that I could wear as merch, so I kept asking for new variations having a universe of cheese logos to choose from.

Prompting 101: The Key to AI Collaboration

Here's a simplified guide to setting up prompts for logo design:

  1. Be Specific: Instead of saying "cheese logo," describe the desired visual elements: "a yellow cheese wedge shaped like a skull, wearing headphones."
  2. Use Descriptive Language: Employ adjectives to evoke the desired style: "bold," "playful," "edgy," and "retro."
  3. Reference Visuals: If you have examples in mind, include them as inspiration.
  4. Iterate and Refine: Don't be afraid to experiment. Tweak your prompts based on the AI's output until you achieve the desired result.

Inspiration: More Than Meets the Eye

The concept evolved from my other idea of just having a slice of cheese wearing headphones and working on a few variations I came across an unexpected observation: the structural similarity between a cheese wedge and a skull. This visual pun sparked a deeper exploration. Cheese, with its rich history and cultural significance, symbolizes comfort, indulgence, and tradition. Conversely, the skull, a universal emblem of mortality and rebellion, embodies a raw, unapologetic edge.

Balancing Contrasts: The Role of Design

The design process involved balancing these contrasting elements to create a cohesive visual identity. Adobe Firefly, with its intuitive AI-driven capabilities, proved to be an invaluable tool. It facilitated the seamless integration of symbolic headphones, representing the DJ's craft, with the cheese and skull motif.separate concepts, a first I was going for a death metal bands aesthetic but replacing the gore on their artworks with melted cheese, but after hours of trying and starting again I decided I wanted it to be a skull made of cheese wearing headphones, in order to make it relatable (and avoid landing in the psych ward lol)

The Psychology of the Cheesy Brand

The logo is designed to resonate with a specific audience: music enthusiasts who appreciate a blend of nostalgia and contemporary sounds. The cheese element evokes a sense of familiarity and comfort, tapping into fond memories associated with classic genres. Simultaneously, the skull motif appeals to those seeking a more rebellious, underground aesthetic.

The Logo in Action

While the logo is a visual cornerstone, the brand extends beyond aesthetics. It encompasses a sonic identity that reflects the eclectic mix of genres I curate – a fusion of comfort and edge. The logo serves as a constant reminder of this unique blend, inviting listeners to embark on a sonic journey that defies expectations.

The Creative Journey Continues

Working on this logo was a transformative experience, reinforcing the importance of thoughtful design in building a compelling brand and letting go of misconceptions about new technology, AI can be your best friend if you learn to use it properly.

The final design – bright yellow cheese against a blue background – commands attention. Subtle red accents in the headphone cable and cheese holes allude to the energetic nature of the music that I play.

As my musical journey evolves, so too will my brand identity. I'm excited to continue exploring the intersection of tradition and edge, creating a sonic experience that resonates with listeners on a profound level.
